The Kitronik Air Quality and Environmental Board turns the BBC micro:bit into a complete environmental monitoring and data-logging system. Using its onboard BME688 sensor, students can measure temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, air quality index and estimated CO2 (eCO2), making it ideal for practical STEM investigations into the environment around them.
Collected data can be viewed directly on the 128 x 64 OLED display or stored using the onboard 1Mbit EEPROM memory. A real-time clock allows readings to be time-stamped, opening up opportunities for longer-term experiments such as monitoring classroom air quality throughout the day, comparing different locations or investigating how heating and ventilation affect the learning environment. Data can then be transferred to a computer for further analysis.
Three programmable ZIP LEDs provide an additional way to display results visually, while pins 0, 1 and 2 are available for adding further inputs and outputs. The board can be programmed using MakeCode, JavaScript or Python, allowing projects to develop alongside students' coding skills.
