What to Expect
Join Cass online for a creative, hands-on introduction to the wonderfully tactile world of bookbinding, learning how simple materials can be transformed into beautiful, functional handmade books.
Working alongside Cass from your own space, you'll be guided through the bookbinding process step by step with live demonstrations, practical instruction and plenty of creative ideas. You'll have the opportunity to make as Cass makes, ask questions along the way and discover techniques that can be adapted for your own creative practice and teaching.
During the workshop you will:
• Follow live, step-by-step bookbinding demonstrations with Cass.
• Learn practical bookbinding techniques through hands-on making.
• Discover how to construct and bind your own handmade book from start to finish.
• Explore creative ways to use paper, card and repurposed materials within bookmaking.
• Learn directly from professional bookbinder and experienced art educator Cass Barron.
• Gain ideas for adapting bookbinding techniques for sketchbooks, journals, artist books and classroom projects.
• Develop skills and techniques that can be taken back into Secondary, FE and HE teaching.
• Create your own finished hand-bound book during the session.
• Ask questions and share ideas with Cass and fellow art educators throughout the workshop
Meet the Artist
Cass Barron
Bookbinder • Artist • Educator
Cass Barron is a professional bookbinder, artist and educator with a passion for sharing the creative possibilities of handmade books and inspiring others to see everyday materials in a completely new way.
Cass first discovered bookbinding while studying Fine Art Sculpture, when she began making her own sketchbooks from materials she had around her. What started as a practical way of creating somewhere to capture ideas soon developed into a fascination with the process of constructing books by hand and the almost endless possibilities of the book as a creative object.
Alongside her creative practice, Cass has a background in art education and community arts and holds a Masters in Art Museum & Gallery Education. She established Bookbinding with Cass to share her knowledge and passion for the craft, and since 2019 has worked full-time as a bookbinder, delivering workshops, courses and creative projects that make traditional bookbinding skills approachable and enjoyable.
Sustainability and creative reuse are central to Cass's practice. She loves transforming paper, textiles, leather remnants, old maps, envelopes and other pre-loved materials into unique handmade books, encouraging makers to look again at materials that might otherwise be discarded.
Whether you're completely new to bookbinding or looking for fresh ways to incorporate handmade books into your own creative practice or teaching, Cass's relaxed and encouraging approach makes this an accessible way to learn, experiment and leave with new skills and plenty of ideas to take back to your students.
