What to Expect
Join us from 9am–4pm at Gladstone Pottery Museum in Stoke-on-Trent – home of Channel 4’s The Great Pottery Throw Down, for a creative day led by ceramic artist Emily Hett.
Known for her joyful, highly decorative ceramics, Emily will introduce you to her approach to colour, pattern and surface decoration before you get hands-on and experiment with techniques yourself.
Whether you’re looking for fresh ideas for GCSE and A Level projects, want to develop your own ceramic practice, or simply fancy spending a day making, experimenting and talking all things clay with fellow art educators, this is a chance to step away from the classroom and get creative.

Meet the Artist
Emily Hett
Ceramic Artist • Sculptor • Tutor
Colour, pattern and joy sit at the heart of Emily Hett’s creative practice.
Emily is a Midlands-based artist creating sculptural and functional ceramics inspired by nature. Her distinctive work combines vibrant colour, organic forms, abstract shapes and intricate hand-painted patterns to create pieces designed to feel abundant, playful and uplifting.
After studying Fine Art at Loughborough University, Emily developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning ceramics, painting and public sculpture. Her work explores a fascinating question: how can colour and form be deliberately used to create feelings of joy?
This approach has developed into a recognisable visual language of bold colour, pattern and tactile forms. Emily combines hand-building and throwing techniques with highly decorative surface treatments, often hand-painting her ceramics with intricate patterns.
Alongside her studio practice, Emily has created public artworks and commissions, exhibited her work and delivered creative workshops. Her projects have included a ceramic sculpture commission for Disney and public artworks for Coventry City of Culture and the National Forest.
During our Ceramic Surface Decoration Workshop, Emily will give participants an insight into the thinking and processes behind her work before sharing techniques that can be explored first-hand – encouraging experimentation with colour, pattern and surface and offering plenty of inspiration to take back into the classroom.
